Within the first 15 days of my appointment as a General Manager, I realised the importance of having a mentor. Interestingly, throughout my journey of climbing through the ranks, I had been unconsciously mentored by my supervisors and clients. However, now that I had reached a higher position, there was no one to provide explicit guidance or direction. I found myself in a new realm where I had to make decisions independently and take full accountability for the outcomes.
Mentorship is a transformative relationship that can shape our personal and professional journeys. There are different types of mentors, from those who recognise our potential and choose us to those whom we aspire to be like, leading us to choose them. In this blog, we will explore the profound impact of mentorship, the different ways it can manifest, and how it can help us navigate the complexities of life.
- The Power of Being Chosen: When a mentor recognises our potential and chooses to invest their time and guidance in us, it can make a world of difference. Their belief in us boosts our confidence and provides valuable support along the way. Whether it’s a teacher, a supervisor, or a seasoned professional, having a mentor who chooses us can ease our journey and open doors to opportunities we may not have seen otherwise.
- Unconscious Mentorship: Mentorship can often happen unknowingly. There are individuals who, without realising it, become instrumental in our growth and development. They see our potential and offer guidance, encouragement, and wisdom. These mentors may be colleagues, friends, or even family members who have a vested interest in our success. Embracing the lessons they unknowingly impart can be a powerful way to learn and grow.
- Taking the Initiative: Sometimes, we need to seek out mentors ourselves. Identifying someone we admire, whose achievements align with our aspirations, allows us to take an active role in our own mentorship. By reaching out to individuals we believe we can learn from, we can shadow them, seek their advice, and gain invaluable knowledge. However, it’s important to note that many experienced mentors may require compensation for their time and expertise.
- Navigating Mentorship Challenges: While mentorship is a rewarding relationship, it is not always easy to find the right mentor or gain their attention. Aspiring mentees often face the hurdle of mentors being too busy to commit their time. It is crucial to manage expectations and understand that mentors have their own responsibilities and limitations. Nevertheless, persistence and a proactive approach can lead to meaningful connections with mentors who are willing to guide and inspire.
- Learning from the Surroundings: Mentorship is not confined to formal relationships or one-on-one interactions. We can find mentors in our everyday surroundings. By being open to learning from colleagues, supervisors, clients, and other individuals we encounter, we can gain valuable insights and perspectives. Observing their actions, seeking advice when needed, and embracing a growth mindset can enable us to learn from the people around us, becoming our own mentors in a sense.
- The Mentorship of Books: Books are a treasure trove of wisdom and guidance. They offer mentorship through the pages, allowing us to learn from the experiences and teachings of great minds. By immersing ourselves in literature authored by those we admire, we can gain new perspectives, expand our knowledge, and fuel our personal growth. Additionally, attending events hosted by inspiring individuals provides opportunities to connect with them and learn directly from their expertise.
In a few short sentences: Mentorship is a transformative force that shapes our personal and professional growth. Whether we are chosen by a mentor or actively seek out guidance, mentorship provides invaluable support, wisdom, and inspiration on our journey to success. Let us remain open to the lessons offered by those around us, immerse ourselves in the mentorship of books, and embrace the transformative power of mentorship to navigate the path to greatness.
It’s very impressive and assuming new role brings a lot huge responsibility (ies).
